Reach Out Malaysia

Charity, the practice of benevolent giving and caring. Unquestionably not only Malaysians are generally caring people. Willingness to help the less fortunate, all of us possesses that morality. One of the ways is by volunteering and doing charity work. There are innumerable ways, which you can participate. Whether if it’s involves money or goods, either ways, there is always something for everyone to do.

February 20th, 2012. 11.30pm-2.30am. I participated in a volunteering program called Reach Out. In simple context, we give food to homeless people. As you all know, Malaysia is a developing country. Populated by different society and culture, people in Malaysia lives in a very peace and harmony. What we don’t see is the problem of poverty that still exist. Here in Kuala Lumpur, there are still people who live in poverty. Basically, what we could understand, we see poverty as a homeless. People who lived without a home and sleep at wherever places they could find. So, here’s my experience during the night.

First, we meet up at Masjid Jamek. There were approximately 10 or more people in a group. Mostly around 23-28 years old (Sorry I just simply assumed). Afterwards, we went to Masjid India. Truthfully, I was so nervous, but when I saw them giving out foods and drinks to the homeless people, I was captivated. Mesmerized in the presence of humanity’s values. Before I forget to mention, food is sponsored both by those organizations with humanitarian programmes and by volunteers themselves. We went to a few locations. Not quiet sure the names of the whereabouts, since I’m not really familiar with KL roads. There was a moment there when I saw a homeless soul sharing his food with two cats. It touched the bottom of my heart. Furthermore, he was actually smiling at the cats. Precious moment. They sleep under the bridge, behind a building and so on. Still, have kindness towards animals.

My advice to all of you, who have laptops, Iphones, Blackberries, cars and a home. Don’t forget to have a sense of humanity. Start giving.

Being mindful and respectful of others' beliefs, Reach Out is, uniquely, strictly non-religious and does not discriminate in terms of race, gender, religion or culture.

Thoughts of intrinsic values.

Intrinsic value is a source of a meaning, importance, purpose, and goodness. Rationally thinking, helping people to attain pleasure and avoid pain as our mind set pleasure is intrinsically good and pain is intrinsically bad.

How can you tell whether something has intrinsic value or not?
This is a conceptual question, for we cannot be sure that something has intrinsic value unless we understand what it is for something to have intrinsic value. Some may understand through experience, some may understand through observation. It makes sense that we care for other people. It is absurd not to. Unless you are a cold-blooded witch who thinks the world revolve around you. To act like one’s own pleasure matters, but no one else’s pleasure matters is a strange denial of intrinsic value.

No answer seems to completely satisfy when it comes to why God allows pain. You may wrestled with this question, only to come up with answers that scarcely fill the soul’s void. Instead of keep questioning, why not start helping? Some people may not have the opportunity to save lives and so on. Still, we should do what we can to help people avoid intrinsically bad things, like pain. That’s the main idea behind morality.

So here I am, asking you people to do good. I'm no angel. I'm just a normal human being. Begging for a change and a better world.
